Breakaway Ministries
Breakaway Ministries is a non-denominational, weekly Bible study on the campus of Texas A&M University. They exist to introduce college students to Jesus Christ and call them to walk with Him for a lifetime. They accomplish this through worship, Bible teaching and resources. While not affiliated with any one church, they work hard to connect students to local, Bible-believing churches. By God's power and for His glory, they live to proclaim the gospel of Christ to college students and connect them to Christ's community and His mission.
Breakaway began in 1989 when twelve Texas A&M students gathered in an apartment to pray together and seek to know God through His Word. God has moved tremendously in the years that followed, growing the ministry from hundreds to thousands, from a tiny apartment to the largest meeting spaces on campus. Now in the midst of hectic schedules, all-nighters and wild weekends, thousands of college students are gathering every week to take a collective step toward their Creator in worship and in the study of His Word.
The Breakaway Ministry operates under the supervision of a Board of Directors. These godly individuals provide a constant flow of wisdom to the director of Breakaway and oversee all the ministry's major decisions. The board is composed of five men who are diverse in personality and occupation:
Brett Wingo // Staff at Young Life's Frontier Ranch in Buena Vista, Colorado.
Gregg Matte // Pastor at Houston's First Baptist Church; founding director of Breakaway.
Dr. Stephen MacDaniel // Marketing professor at Texas A&M.
Dr. Jim Giles // Orthopedic Surgeon in Bryan, Texas
Dr. Kenneth Werlein // Pastor at Faithbridge UMC in Spring, Texas
Ben Stuart has been the Executive Director for Breakaway since the summer of 2005. He grew up in Houston, Texas, and graduated from Texas A&M University in 1998. After graduation, Ben served as a youth pastor in Spring, Texas, as a teacher at Houston's Metro Bible Study, and as a speaker at youth camps and conferences. Along with Breakaway, Ben currently attends Dallas Theological Seminary and enjoys spending time with his beautiful wife, Donna, and their dog, Tai. Ben's passion in life is knowing God and making Him known.
